Is chocolate milk a good recovery drink?
The recovery-drink case rests on chocolate milk's carbohydrate and protein content rather than on anything specific to cocoa.

Real human studies exist and point somewhere, but the body of evidence is small, mixed, short-term or heavily industry-funded.
What the evidence shows
A number of small trials have compared chocolate milk with commercial recovery beverages after endurance exercise and reported comparable or favourable results on measures such as subsequent time to exhaustion and glycogen resynthesis. The proposed mechanism is its carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, which falls in the range recovery formulations target, combined with fluid and electrolyte replacement.
What it does not show
It does not show that cocoa contributes the effect. Ordinary milk with added carbohydrate would be expected to perform similarly, and the studies generally do not isolate cocoa as a variable. Nor does it establish benefit for recreational exercise: the trials typically use trained participants after substantial endurance loads, a context in which rapid glycogen replacement matters in a way it does not after a moderate session. Separate claims about cocoa flavanols improving exercise performance itself rest on a thinner literature again.
The amount the finding rests on
Trials typically supply chocolate milk at a volume delivering roughly the carbohydrate and protein a recovery formulation would, after substantial endurance exercise.
The quantity is chosen to match a recovery target, not because chocolate is the active ingredient. Ordinary milk with added carbohydrate would be expected to behave similarly.
In practice: After moderate recreational exercise the glycogen replacement these trials target is not the limiting factor, so the quantities studied do not transfer.
How good is the evidence
Trials are small, of short duration, and several have been funded by dairy industry bodies — which does not invalidate them and is a disclosure a reader should have. The outcome measures vary between studies, which limits comparison. The finding is best read as 'chocolate milk is a reasonable carbohydrate-and-protein recovery option' rather than as anything about cocoa.

- Findings come from trained participants after substantial endurance exercise and do not transfer straightforwardly to recreational activity.
- Not applicable to anyone avoiding dairy, and the plant-milk equivalents have not been studied in the same way.
