Halloween chocolate
A season defined by a packaging requirement rather than by a product — and miniatures are a reformulation rather than a smaller bar.
If you read nothing else
The miniature exists because the custom requires it, and it is a reformulation rather than a smaller bar. Keep the outer packaging — the individual wrappers often carry no allergen information.
The format follows the social requirement
Trick-or-treating needs a product that can be handed over individually, unwrapped by the recipient rather than the giver, and visibly untampered with. The individually wrapped miniature answers all three, and that is the entire reason it dominates the season.
It is unusual for a chocolate season to be defined by packaging rather than by a shape or a flavour, and it explains why the category looks the way it does everywhere it has been exported.
Miniatures are not small bars
Shrinking a filled bar changes the ratio of coating to filling, and the coating has to survive handling by a lot of people. So miniatures are frequently a different formulation from their full-size counterparts, with a firmer coating and sometimes a different filling consistency.
Bulk seasonal packs are also produced well ahead of the date. An October bag can taste flatter than the same product bought in June, and that is storage rather than a different recipe.
Practical points
Allergens are the one thing worth real attention. Miniature and fun-size packaging frequently omits the full ingredient list that the multipack outer carries, so the outer bag is the document to keep if anyone in the household needs to check.
For households buying in bulk, storage is the other issue. Large quantities bought early and kept in a warm room will bloom, and bloomed chocolate handed to children looks spoiled even though it is not.
