Does chocolate contain caffeine, and will it keep me awake?
Chocolate contains both caffeine and theobromine, in amounts far below a cup of coffee, and theobromine behaves differently from caffeine in ways that are not well characterised at dietary levels.
Plausible mechanism, limited human evidence
There is a credible biological or chemical reason it might be true, and that is different from evidence that it is.
What the evidence shows
Cacao contains theobromine as its principal methylxanthine and caffeine in smaller quantities. Both are stimulants of the same chemical family. Because concentration follows cocoa solids, dark chocolate contains more of both than milk chocolate, and white chocolate contains essentially none of either. The quantities in a typical serving of dark chocolate are well below those in a standard cup of coffee.
What it does not show
Whether the amounts in a normal serving of chocolate meaningfully affect sleep, alertness or mood is not established, and individual sensitivity to methylxanthines varies widely. Theobromine's effects at dietary doses are less well characterised than caffeine's. ChocolateHQ publishes no per-serving figures because its sources for them have not been verified.
How good is the evidence
The presence and relative proportions of the two compounds are well established. Their effects at the doses found in ordinary chocolate consumption are not, and claims in either direction — that chocolate is a meaningful stimulant, or that its stimulant content is negligible for everyone — go beyond the evidence.
Who this may not apply to
- People who are unusually sensitive to caffeine may notice effects at doses others do not.
- European food safety guidance addresses caffeine intake in pregnancy separately from intake in the general adult population, and states a lower daily figure for it. Chocolate contributes to total intake alongside coffee, tea and cola, and contributes far less than any of them per serving.
- Children's smaller body mass makes a given quantity a larger dose per kilogram, and the chocolate and children record covers that separately.
Caffeine in pregnancy, and where chocolate sits in it
European food safety guidance considers caffeine intake during pregnancy separately from the general adult position and states a lower daily figure for it. That figure is an intake across everything consumed, not a limit on any one food.
What that means for chocolate specifically is arithmetic rather than a special concern. A serving of dark chocolate contains a small fraction of the caffeine in a cup of coffee, and milk and white chocolate contain less again — white chocolate essentially none, because it has no cocoa solids. Chocolate is a minor contributor to a total that is dominated by coffee, tea and caffeinated soft drinks.
Chocolate also carries theobromine, which is a different methylxanthine and is not what the caffeine guidance addresses. Its effects at dietary doses are less well characterised than caffeine's, and no guidance figure for it exists in a form this catalogue would cite.
ChocolateHQ does not print per-serving caffeine figures, because the sources for them have not been passage-verified, and it does not say what anyone should consume. What can be stated is where chocolate sits relative to the other sources: well down the list.
