Is dark chocolate good for your heart?

There is real evidence that cocoa flavanols affect a specific measure of blood vessel function, and a large gap between that finding and 'chocolate is good for your heart'.

What the evidence shows

Cocoa flavanols have been studied for their effect on endothelium-dependent vasodilation — the ability of blood vessels to widen in response to increased blood flow. The European Food Safety Authority assessed a claim on this specific measure and it is the basis of an authorised EU health claim, which makes it one of very few food claims to clear that process. Separately, a Cochrane systematic review examined the effect of cocoa on blood pressure and found short-term effects in trials.

What it does not show

Neither finding establishes that eating chocolate reduces heart attacks, strokes or deaths. Both concern short-term measurements of intermediate markers — vessel dilation and blood pressure readings — in trials generally lasting weeks. An intermediate marker moving in a favourable direction is a reason to keep investigating, not a demonstration of clinical benefit. The evidence also does not establish that any commercially available chocolate delivers the amounts used in the research.

The amount the finding rests on

The EU authorised claim is tied to a daily intake of cocoa flavanols in the region of 200 milligrams, from products supplying it.

This is a specified daily intake of the flavanol compounds, not an amount of chocolate. ChocolateHQ states the figure approximately because the conditions of use have not been re-read against the published opinion.

In practice: Flavanol content in chocolate varies enormously and is destroyed in large part by processing — particularly by alkalisation, which is applied to most cocoa powder. Reaching the intake by eating ordinary dark chocolate would mean consuming a substantial quantity of sugar and fat alongside it, which the same evidence base does not endorse. A high cocoa percentage is not a reliable indicator of flavanol content.

How good is the evidence

The regulatory assessment is a strong form of evidence for the narrow claim it covers. The wider trial literature has real limitations: trials are typically short, use intermediate endpoints, and a substantial proportion have been funded by the confectionery industry — a limitation the Cochrane review itself raises. Neither source in ChocolateHQ's register has been passage-verified, which is why this topic is held at emerging research rather than established evidence.

Who this may not apply to

  • Anyone managing blood pressure or cardiovascular disease should treat this as background reading rather than as a reason to change anything, and speak to a clinician.
  • The trials generally studied healthy adults or adults with mild hypertension, and their findings do not transfer automatically to other groups.

    Research on cocoa flavanols and short-term measures of vascular function is real, and a narrowly scoped EU health claim exists on that basis. It concerns a specified daily intake of flavanol compounds, not chocolate. Flavanol content is not indicated by cocoa percentage, is substantially reduced by ordinary processing, and is not declared on mainstream products. Meanwhile the non-cacao mass of a dark bar is overwhelmingly sugar.

    Where it comes from: Traceable in large part to industry-funded research programmes and the press coverage built on them. The Cochrane review of cocoa and blood pressure notes industry funding across a substantial share of the trials it includes.

Why the percentage on the bar does not tell you

Flavanols are bitter, and much of chocolate manufacturing is aimed at reducing bitterness — fermentation reduces polyphenols, roasting reduces them further, and alkalisation reduces them substantially. A bar's cocoa percentage measures cacao-derived mass, not surviving flavanols, and two 85% bars can differ several-fold. No mainstream chocolate declares flavanol content.
