Grenada

A tiny Caribbean producer, and one of the earliest places in the world where a chocolate maker manufactured on the island the cacao grew on.

Grenada grows a very small quantity of cacao, historically organised through a national cocoa association. Its significance is that it was among the first places to demonstrate the tree-to-bar model at commercial scale — chocolate made on the island from island-grown beans, rather than beans exported to be manufactured elsewhere.

That model has since been adopted in several producing countries and is one of the more substantive structural changes in the sector, because it keeps considerably more of the value where the cacao is grown.

Growing conditions

Small plantings across the island's volcanic interior, exposed to hurricane risk — Hurricane Ivan in 2004 destroyed a large share of the crop.

Production scale

A very small producer, significant for on-island manufacturing rather than volume.
