Nigeria

A major West African producer whose cacao sector was displaced by oil and has been partially rebuilt since.

West Africaforasterotrinitario

Nigeria was among the largest cacao producers in the world in the mid-twentieth century. The growth of the petroleum industry from the 1970s pulled investment, labour and policy attention away from agriculture, and cacao output fell substantially over the decades that followed.

Production has recovered to the extent that Nigeria remains a significant exporter, concentrated in the south-west. Most output is bulk grade sold into the blending trade, and the sector faces the ageing-tree and yield constraints common across the region.
