What equipment you actually need
A probe thermometer and a bowl. Everything beyond that buys convenience rather than capability, with two exceptions.
Almost all home chocolate work needs a digital probe thermometer, a heatproof bowl and baking paper. That is genuinely the list — seeding requires no slab, no machine and no moulds.
Two things do buy capability rather than convenience. Polycarbonate moulds, because the gloss on a moulded bonbon is a cast of the mould surface and silicone cannot produce it. And a melangeur, if the intention is to make chocolate from beans, because no blender reaches the particle size required.
Everything else — tempering machines, marble slabs, dipping forks, spray guns — makes existing work faster or more consistent without making anything newly possible.

Method
1. Start with a digital probe thermometer. Nothing else improves results as much for the money.
2. Add polycarbonate moulds only when you want the mirror finish silicone cannot give.
3. Treat a tempering machine as a batch-size decision rather than a quality one — it needs one to three kilograms to work at all.
When it goes wrong
