A small West African producer rebuilding a cacao sector interrupted by civil conflict, with speciality output emerging from the east of the country.
Sierra Leone's cacao is grown mainly in the eastern districts, much of it on old plantings under forest shade. The sector was severely disrupted by civil conflict in the 1990s, and rehabilitation of abandoned farms has been a substantial part of its recent history.
A speciality export trade has developed, generally through cooperatives with centralised fermentation. Volumes are small and the record is short, which is why claims about a national flavour character are held loosely here.

ChocolateHQ has not found a consistent flavour description for Sierra Leonean cacao across the sources consulted, and does not invent one. Individual speciality lots are described in makers' own tasting notes; that is a statement about a lot rather than about an origin.
Post-harvest handling matters at least as much as genetics, and is frequently the real explanation for what is described as an origin character. See fermentation.
Cooperative fermentation centres established during rehabilitation are the basis of the specialty trade. Farm-level fermentation remains common for bulk material.
A claim about a country generalises across thousands of farms and dozens of fermentation protocols. A claim about one of these can be right. Where a region has evidence and depth of its own it has a page; where it does not, it is described here rather than given a thin one.
