Solomon Islands
A very small Pacific producer with the same wood-fire drying legacy as Papua New Guinea, and a comparable smoky signature.
Cacao is one of the Solomon Islands' significant agricultural exports despite the country's small absolute output. It is grown by smallholders across Guadalcanal, Makira and Malaita, and shares Papua New Guinea's climate problem: rainfall through the harvest makes sun drying unreliable, so wood-fired dryers are common and smoke taint is frequent.
Work on solar and indirect-heat dryers has produced cleaner lots, and those are what reach the speciality market.
